IMPORTANT YOUNG MUSICIAN HISTORY * The Eastney Modern School Band and School Orchestra note:- In 1961, Wesley Johnson, the Music Advisor for Portsmouth introduced a pilot scheme to teach brass, woodwind and non-fretted stringed instruments at Eastney Modern School, John Pounds Girls School, Southern Grammar School and the Technical High School. Specialist teachers were employed, such as Benny Freeman (Violins) from the Savoy Ballroom, George Hunnisett (Clarinet), Fred Monk (Brass), Brother Eddie Legget from the Salvation Army (Brass), Harold Price ex-Royal Marines’ Band Sargent (Brass) and Ted Metcalfe (‘cello and Double Bass). All were inspirational teachers and very soon bands were formed at all schools, with orchestras also at Eastney Modern and Technical High. The aim was to prepare the young musicians for service in Her Majesty’s Royal Marines’ Band Service and many went on the be proud Royal Marines’ Bandsmen and some became Bandmasters, with others just enjoying their music whilst pursuing other careers and joining local brass bands. Military bands and orchestras, with Martin Restall opening Restall Violin Shop in 1979 and Chris Waters opening his brass and woodwind shop, Gabriels Horn House Ltd in 1978. Wesley Johnson and the teachers inspired many of the Portsmouth musicians of the 60’s, 70’s and beyond.
